Paul J. Smith was an American music composer and violinist best known for his work at Disney. He did music for animated and live-action films alike and won Academy Awards for his work.

History[]

Smith was born in Calumet, Michigan on October 30, 1906. Upon graduating high school, he studied music at The College of Idaho from 1923 to 1925 before he was accepted into the Bush Conservatory of Music in Chicago, Illinois. After being recruited by Disney, he wrote music for various cartoon shorts before helping to score Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio, for which he would receive his only Academy Award for Best Original Score. In Fantasia, he is one of the studio employees in the orchestra.

He would spend the next two decades composing for many Disney productions, animated and live-action alike, including Cinderella, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Shaggy Dog, The Parent Trap, and several installments of the True-Life Adventures series. He collaborated mostly with Hazel "Gil" George, who wrote the title song for The Light in the Forest with both him and Lawrence Edward Watkin.

He also did some work outside of Disney, including such films as Glamour Girl, Love Happy and Pecos River, as well as the TV show Leave It To Beaver. He also did stock music for the Blondie series of the late 1940s.

Smith died on January 25, 1985, in Glendale, California, from Alzheimer's disease at age 78. In 1994, he was posthumously honored as a Disney Legend.
